ROSE Rosa Damascena
In the small rose growing mountain region of Bulgaria, the rose blossoms of Rosa Damascena legendary for their exquisite aroma begin to bloom across the 20,000 something small rose gardens during May and continue to bloom for three or four weeks. The harvesting season starts as soon as the flower begins to open and continues until all the roses have been gathered. Typically the rose harvest lasts just over 4 weeks per year.

In Bulgaria, the blossoms are still collected by hand. Collection begins at sunrise when the essential oil content is at its peak and is often completed by 10am whilst the dew is still on the flowers. Flowers are placed into baskets and then transferred in sacks to distilleries.

Jurlique’s Rosewater Balancing Mist contains Rose Damascena. It’s estimated there are between 8000 to 9000 petals in every precious bottle based on the amount of essential oil we use, and the number of petals required to produce a single ml of oil.

LAVENDER Lavandula angustifolia

True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has the most subtle essential oil and is highly sought after by perfumers. It thrives in chalky soils and hot, dry climate of the higher altitudes in France.

A ton of lavender produces 5-10kg of Lavandula angustifolia essential oil.

Lavender fields often begin blooming in June (depending on area and seasonal weather).

Harvest often runs from July through to September when the hot sun brings up the essence into the flower. Older lavender fields are often still picked by hand and dried by 2-3 days before taken to the distillery.
